What vaccinations are needed, what should we look out for?

Dog health knowledge, tasks

Currently in Hungary, the only compulsory vaccination, the rabies vaccine, which must be repeated annually. It must be given from the age of 3 months at the earliest and repeated after 6 months. It is also a compulsory vaccination abroad, but the frequency is different! A titer test can be used to check whether immunity has been established in the individual.

Recommended vaccination there are many more. Their vaccination programmes vary from country to country.

    • 6 weeks of age: Parvo vaccination
    • 8 weeks of age: Combined (Parvo+Szopornyica)
    • At 10 weeks:(Parvo+Szopornyica)
  • (12- 13 weeks of age: Against Rabies)
  • At 14-15 weeks of age: Kennel cough

+ Vaccination against Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, but these are not common in vaccination programmes!

Regular treatments:

  • Worm drive: 2,4,6,8, then 12 weeks of age, before vaccinations! This should be repeated quarterly, especially for dogs that are frequently out and about in the community! It is also advisable to alternate the preparations.

  • Heartworm disease: Heartworm disease is caused by Dirofilaria immitis, a nematode. It is a parasite that is transmitted by different species of mosquitoes (vector-borne infectious disease). It is now increasingly common in our country, spread by mosquitoes in Africa and countries with warmer climates. It should be controlled monthly, but the products should only be administered on the advice of a veterinarian, after checking that it is not already present in the organism of the individual! Dogs under 6 months of age are not yet affected! Prevention is the key!

  • Mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, flies, mites, scabies and many other parasites it is advisable to protect against. It is possible to use complex preparations!

Diseases:

  • Giardia: It mainly infects individuals with a weak immune system, puppies. Ferdocat tablets or pastes can be used to control it, but in the case of an established disease, a course of ferdocat for 5-10 days is necessary. This type of worm colonises the digestive system, i.e. the small intestine. It spreads by defecation! Symptoms: loss of appetite, foul-smelling diarrhoea, bloody stools, bloating, weight loss. Very thorough cleaning can prevent the chance of re-infection!
  • Kennel cough: A number of viruses and bacteria can cause kennel cough, and often several pathogens can be present at the same time. These include adenoviruses type 2, parainfluenza virus, canine coronavirus and Bordetella bronchiseptica, among others. A combination vaccine (Versican) is now available that contains parvovirus, distemper, adenovirus and parainfluenza virus! Symptoms: cough, vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, sputum. It spreads very easily, sniffing each other, during play.
  • Coronavirus: Canine coronavirus (CcoV) - is a worldwide virus that mainly affects caged animals and puppies, in which it causes intestinal problems. Symptoms include loss of appetite, weakness, bloody, watery diarrhoea and can be fatal in dogs with weak immune systems.Parvo: The parvovirus is most dangerous for puppies and young dogs, as they have a weaker immune system, but it can be caught at any age. Canine parvovirus is spread by infected dogs through their faeces and vomit. Therefore, it can be caught anywhere, e.g.: in the street, in parks, in dog runs. But it can also be spread by birds or even by us, if we have been on contaminated soil, and unfortunately we can bring it home with the soles of our shoes. Symptoms: loss of appetite, lethargy, diarrhoea which is extremely smelly, high fever, vomiting, dehydration. It has a very high mortality rate in puppyhood and is very difficult to eradicate in the garden or kennel.
  • Szopornyica: Distemper is a viral infectious disease that is acute, causes severe symptoms and is often fatal. Canine distemper is highly contagious, spread by droplet infection, carried and transmitted mainly by the following body fluids and substances from one dog to another: urine, faeces, nasal secretions. Distemper in dogs always starts with a high fever. It can then develop into three distinct phases. It is less common nowadays, but it is still very serious and can also lead to death.

How to travel with a dog?

Before travelling, especially for puppies, it's a good idea to skip a meal to avoid possible sickness. It is also very important to transport dogs in a suitable carrier, a carrier cage or plastic crate, for your own safety and the safety of your dog. It is advisable to make the crate homely and comfortable for him to have a positive experience.

Can it be kept in an apartment?

Yes it is keepable, but first of all, you have to treat the dog like a family member, but not like a human! Designate the right place to play and rest! Teach him the rules according to your comfort level, because you decide what's ok and what's not! For example, if he can jump up on the sofa but not on the bed, it is your responsibility to teach him that. It's a good idea to lay down some ground rules for yourself straight away and to stick to them consistently. Dogs like to live by rules, so you are making their life easier. It is a fact that dogs kept indoors must be walked several times a day, in winter and summer, in rain and heat. Everyone should keep their dog indoors with this in mind!

Is it worth going to dog school?

Yes, it's worth going to dog school, especially if you have a new dog or want your dog to be well behaved, obedient and socialised. Although I should point out that dog schools don't train dogs, they train us!

Some of the benefits of dog school:

  • Learning basic agility: Sit, lie, stay, call in, etc.

  • Socialisation: Meeting other dogs and people, which helps to avoid fear or aggression.

  • Expert advice: A professional trainer will help you understand how to communicate effectively with your dog.

  • Dealing with behavioural problems: For example, if there is pulling, barking or other problem behaviour, you can get professional help there.

Of course, if you already have experience or are very attached to your dog and can handle him well at home, you don't have to. But in many cases, dog training can make everyday life easier and build a closer relationship with your dog.

Don't they get cold in winter?

The answer is NO! Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to keep Beagles outside in the winter and even have a puppy with you during this cold season. Our standard menu gives you a detailed description of their coat, but essentially their short, dense coat is highly resistant to the weather. This means that neither a small coat nor any other shop-bought accessories are necessary.

Beagles, like all dogs, are preparing for the winter, but we can do something for them too with a good choice of quality food. This can be meat or food, but we should always pay a little more attention to the fat content of their food. In addition to nutrition, a well-insulated dog house can take care of all your worries.

Is it suitable for children?

No matter what TOP 10 list you read, the Beagle is guaranteed to be on it, and of course that's no coincidence.Yes, the Beagle is usually a very good choice for children! They are typically friendly, playful, affectionate and energetic - qualities that make them a good match for a family with children. They love company and generally tolerate active play and petting from children.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Perseverance and patience: children need to be taught how to handle the dog correctly, so that the play or the teething is not too intense, because no dog, regardless of breed, likes to be constantly stroked and teased.

All in all, if the family is prepared to deal with it properly and teach the children the correct way to hold a dog, it can be a great companion for children.

Is the Beagle really a leapfrog?

There is no such thing as a breed that specifically escapes!

This breed of dog was originally bred for hunting and has a very strong sense of smell and curiosity. If they smell an interesting scent or scent trail, they can easily follow it, even if it means leaving the designated area. Because of this, Beagles may be prone to running away if there is no properly secure fence or supervision.
So it's important to have a secure, well-fenced yard or garden where they can't climb or tunnel through. Pay attention to training, such as recall, so that you have better control.

The most important thing to do is to teach the dog the KAPU rule, which means that your pet waits outside the door until you go out and give him permission to come with us. This task not only makes our daily life easier, but also teaches our four-legged friend patience.

How much time should we spend with our dog?

Beagles are moderately sedentary, so they may need up to 2-3 hours of walking a day. Dogs kept in the garden obviously get exercise during the day, but that doesn't mean they don't need to be walked. I believe that every dog and owner pair needs 15-20 minutes of conscious exercise a day. In my opinion, this is something anyone can do! In the meantime, our relationship with the dog is constantly building and it becomes easier and easier to live together.

How many years do they live, can they be increased?

The life expectancy of a Beagle is usually 11-14 years, but some live longer, up to 16 years. To increase life expectancy, a Beagle's health needs to be monitored and cared for, which includes proper nutrition, regular exercise, and medical treatment.

Factors affecting lifespan:

Nutrition:

Proper nutrition and the prevention of overweight are important for health and longevity.

Move:

Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy weight and reduces the risk of disease.

Food supplements: food supplements are designed to support the dog's nutrition in the best way and to replace nutrients that are missing from the diet. There are many different types of supplements, such as vitamins, minerals, probiotics, amino acids, as well as joint protectors and immune boosters. When choosing a supplement, it is important to consider the age, breed, health and current needs of the dog.

How much does our dog eat?

It is very important that every dog is unique. So the quantity should be tailored to them. That's why I don't recommend anyone sticking to the quantity on the packet. Because puppies grow quickly and their digestive and immune systems develop slowly, their nutritional needs are very specific and different from adult dogs. A complete diet that meets the specific needs of puppies is vital to promote healthy development and lay the foundation for a healthy future. Many people fear that their puppy will become obese as a puppy, but their high energy needs and rapid growth make this almost impossible!

When and what kind of reward snack can be given?

The dog reward wall is an excellent tool to reinforce good behaviour and the learning process of our dogs. These small treats are easy to dispense and are ideal for motivating dogs and using positive reinforcement. Dog treats are available in a variety of flavours and sizes, so you can find something to suit any dog. These tasty treats can also help dogs brush their teeth and maintain oral hygiene. They can also help to reduce anxiety and help dogs adapt to new environments, as well as providing a 'tasty' activity! Healthy dog treats can help maintain dogs' weight and establish healthy eating habits. Dog treats are an excellent source of protein and other important nutrients that help keep dogs healthy and vital. They are also often used to facilitate the administration of medical treatments or medications. We prefer natural animal-based reward kibbles.
